Tiina Ripatti is a designer who works on a surprising variety of art and design projects. She is a textile artist and designer (with a degree from the University of Art and Design Helsinki, now Aalto University) as well as a graphic designer (graduated from the Lahti Institute of Design). Ripatti has created unique art textiles and worked as a textile designer in Paris. She has taken part in numerous textile art exhibitions and several of her works can be found in public art collections. In the field of graphic design Ripatti mainly does book design. She describes her broad scale, “By working in both fields I can observe things from a very broad perspective and have varied points of view to use in my works. Structure plays an important role. I also find old traditions, as well as new technical possibilities fascinating.”
AKILEIJA
Akileija is a series of white tablecloths. Their light, embossed check pattern is formed by narrow pleats. The pleats also have a practical function: they help in folding the tablecloth. The textiles are made of cotton fabric and the pleats are sewn. There are also matching napkins available. The series brings the old tradition of formal white table textiles to today’s celebrations.
