Renata Jakowleff was born in Budapest, Hungary, and is now based in Porvoo, Finland as an artist working in glass media. Jakowleff graduated from the University of Art and Design Helsinki in 2005. She has since held several solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions and art competitions. Her next solo exhibitions will be held at the Finnish Glass Museum (2010) and Gallery Täky (2011). Besides her artwork, Jakowleff produces small-scale tableware and decorative items, as well as design commissions for companies and private people. She produces her designs herself or with many local masters using variable techniques: blowing, casting, coldworking, etc. Jakowleff describes her work: “In working with glass, I feel the biggest challenge is the liquidity of the hot glass. My approach comes close to being a science. I have carried out several projects with the aim of finding new ways to work hot glass. The new technical ideas have challenged me to explore the nature of molten glass and to survey its formal language. I have always worked relying on the material, trying to minimize my own aesthetical aspirations, to act instead as an ‘assistant’ for the molten glass to help it create its own formal manifestations.”
