ARNI AROMAA, ILMARI AHOLA AND VELI-PEKKA NISKA WITH SAMI SUIHKONEN / AALTO UNIVERSITY
Pentagon Design’s approach is insightful, business- and end user-driven design, which starts from a profound understanding of the client’s business drivers and consumer perspectives. This dualistic insight is applied to creating a desirable vision, which is then converted into concrete outcomes: the uncompromising design Pentagon Design is known for. Pentagon Design’s mission is to reinvent the everyday. They aim at designing inventive, long-lasting solutions that meet specific, everyday needs, thereby generating delight for consumers and concrete value for their clients. In the 22-77° LED luminaire Pentagon Design designers Ilmari Ahola, Veli-Pekka Niska and Creative Director Arni Aromaa teamed up together with Aalto University’s Research Scientist Sami Suihkonen (Dr.Sc. Tech.), who provided the technical LED expertise.
22-77°
The award-winning 22-77° luminaire is a kinetic lighting element that utilizes the heat generation of LEDs in its form and technical implementation. The technical potential and limitations of LEDs are taken into account in the design. The luminaire consists of four cross-shaped thermo bi-metal parts that act as the framework. The thermo bi-metal strips straighten out when heated by the LEDs and bend back when they cool down to room temperature: thus the cooling function is designed into the luminaire itself. Each of the four crosses has its own temperature sensor; this creates the light’s symmetrical rhythmic movement.
