Ari Kanerva

Ari Kanerva is a Finnish designer living in Helsinki. He established his own studio in 2008, where his main focus is on furniture, product, exhibition and interior design. Kanerva studied Spatial and Furniture Design at the University of Art and Design Helsinki (now part of Aalto University) and graduated (MA) in 2008. Alongside his studies he worked for the Finnish furniture design industry. Kanerva describes his working methods: “From a sketch on paper, through handmade mockups to a finished industrial product, it is the chain of problems and solutions that I find fascinating. I try to make my design simple and functional, yet play with forms. I also aim at a balanced appearance where none of the details predominate.”

TIUKU

The Tiuku clock presents the traditional grandfather’s clock with a twist. Rather than the familiar classic, heavy, decorated freestanding clock and pendulum that dominates the room, Kanerva has given the grandfather’s clock a modern and light touch that still features a swinging pendulum. This colored, contemporary minimalist version carries nothing extra and uses as little material as possible. It leans against the wall and can be fixed to the wall from behind. The clock’s body is powder coated sheet steel that is laser cut and bent, which stiffens the legs and creates a three-dimensional object from the two-dimensional sheet. The pendulum is of powder coated aluminum, and the clockworks and hands are pre-manufactured parts. Tiuku can be disassembled and recycled if needed. The Tiuku clock is manufactured by Covo, Italy.
